European Radio for Belarus

European Radio for Belarus European Radio for Belarus (ERB) is an international radio station based in Warsaw that has been providing independent news, information, and entertainment to the citizens of Belarus since February 2006. ERB operates on AM, FM, Satellite, and the Internet (www.belradio.fm) in order to reach the broadest possible audience.

The goal of the radio station is to deliver factual, current and trustworthy information to Belarusian listeners about events in Belarus and the world as well as to provide access to the best of Belarusian and world culture. The programs are prepared by Belarusian journalists in Warsaw, Minsk and throughout Belarus. Civic Belarus is one of the founders of and shareholders in this international project, which is also supported by the Czech Foreign Ministry.

From June 8 to June 18 (except for Sunday), you can listen to an ERB reportage from the Czech Republic every day at 11.30 am (Minsk time). The topics cover life of foreign students, drug legalization or the homeless in Czechia. Until 8 pm every day, you can answer questions concerning the reportages and win one of the prizes provided by Czech Embassy in Minsk. On June 18 at 9 pm, the main prize will be played for - two air tickets to Prague are at stake!

Visit of European Radio for Belarus in Prague

At the beginning of April, the management of European Radio for Belarus visited the Czech Republic. The director, editor-in-chief and project coordinator presented the results and strategy of the Radio to the board of Civic Belarus (CB is one of the founders of ERB) and to the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Czech MFA has been financially and otherwise supporting ERB since its foundation). ERB representatives also met Minister of Foreign Affairs Jan Kohout and discussed with him the current situation with media freedom in Belarus. They also visited Radio Wave, Czech radio for the youth, learnt how foreign news room in the daily Hospodarske noviny is organized, how news portal Aktualne.cz is structured and how CT24 portal informs on election campaigns and elections.

In 2009, the broadcasting of the European Radio for Belarus continued. This radio station broadcasts from Warsaw with the support of Czech, American and other governments since 2005 and currently has 280 000 listeners and over 150 000 Belarusians read each month the ERB reports reproduced in other media, for example the popular http://www.tut.by.

In November, the European Radio for Belarus – supported among others by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs – received the accreditation to open a representative office in Belarus. On 30th November, twelve ERB journalists gained accreditation to work in Belarus. The Belarusian authorities adopted this fairly ground-breaking decision several days before the EU revision of the sanctions against Belarus.

 
ERB organized the Third “Be Free” Festival

On 22 and 23 August, 20 000 people attended the third year of “Be Free” festival. More than twenty bands mainly from Belarus, but also Ukraine, Poland and France played at the festival.

The festival, although being Belarusian, took place in Ukraine, as in previous years. It cannot be organized in Belarus because of the excessive administrative requirements of Belarusian authorities.
